5 Things We Love About Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds have long been a popular indoor shade solution for our customers. They provide a great choice for rooms throughout the house and are available in a wide variety of colours and textures to suit each home.

Whilst their name would suggest that they originated in Venice, Italy, contrary to this popular belief, Venetian blinds actually originated in Persia.  It is believed that this innovative shade solution was bought back from Persia by Venetian traders.  In the late 1700s, the Venetian style blinds were brought to France by liberated Venetian slaves – the French name for Venetian window blinds being, ‘Les Persienes’, is believed to make reference to their Persian origins.

In the 1940s, the first Venetian blinds with aluminium slats appeared, and with the growing range of fabrics and materials for slats, this centuries old style remains just as popular today. At Taydec, we love Venetian blinds, and here are just a few of the reasons why:

1. Control

One of the key reasons for the continued popularity of these horizontal slatted blinds is the control they provide over how much light they let in and how much shade they create. Controlled by a simple cord mechanism, horizontal blinds are also quicker to open and close than some other blinds and the slats can be carefully adjusted to control not only light, but also privacy.

2. Security

As well as helping to provide privacy, protecting your home from prying eyes, horizontal blinds such as wooden, faux wood or aluminium Venetian blinds also provide a further obstacle for any intruders attempting to break in and enter your home.  Whilst they may not be as secure as window shutters, they certainly slow down the perpetrator and create a lot of noise if an individual attempts to break through them.

3. Timeless style

Quite simply put, Venetian blinds are an elegant shade solution that fits just as well in a modern home as they did in the high society of 18th century Venice. As materials and technology have developed (including the introduction of motorised blinds), blinds have modernised, whilst still maintaining the sophisticated simplicity of the original design.

4. Versatility

Simple yet stylish aesthetics, combined with control and choice of colours, textures and materials, mean that Venetian blinds are a great fit for any room in the house, and every home, school or place of work. Whilst wooden blinds are popular, for rooms with higher levels of moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms, faux wood or aluminium slats can be chosen to ensure that they are not affected by the environment over time.

5. Low maintenance

When installed by professionals, using the best available materials, Venetian blinds are long lasting and require very little maintenance. To keep them in tip top condition, a wipe across each slat with a cloth or duster every once in a while is all that needs to be done. As stated above, wooden blinds aren’t recommended in high moisture environments, but faux wooden blinds can easily be wiped down, without the threat of warping wood.

All in all, it’s no wonder that Venetian blinds are so popular with our customers.
